Spain - Overview
Spain is separated from France in the north by the Pyrenees
and it shares the Iberian peninsula with Portugal. Mallorca,
Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera - collectively known as The Balearic
Islands are part of Spain as well as the Canary Islands, found
off the west coast of Africa.
Spain ranks second to Switzerland in terms of its mountainous
countryside and has miles and miles of amazing scenery. The
north and south of Spain are in complete contrast to each other
with the north offering winding rivers and green forests and
the south being associated with its beautiful coastline and
plentiful sea, sun and sangria.
Spain is very well known for tapas and partying until the early
hours. Its cultural heritage consists of flamenco, painting,
opera, literature, sport, bullfighting and fiestas. Many cities
combine partying and drinking in bars with cultural features,
such as, museums, galleries and churches.
The authoritarian regime was transformed into a democratic Government
in 1975. Before this Spain was a dictatorship. Now, Spain in
a democracy with autonomy given to the elected regional authorities,
however, there is still tension between the state and the separatist
movement in the north in the Basque region.
