Proven ability to work on a number of complex interrelated issues. Capability to build and lead a mixed discipline team building up to at least 40 engineers. Familiarity with all aspects of the project life cycle from design to production, including design reviews, system and subsystem test. Prior experience with spacecraft projects for a large institutional or commercial Customer would be preferred but a minimum of working on complex engineering design development and build projects not IT. Solar Orbiter presents unique engineering challenges with its close proximity to the Sun. Previous involvement at engineering leadership level in programmes with significant space technology development would be advantageous. The key domain is engineering management of the design, development, validation and delivery of high value systems, comprising thermal, mechanical, propulsion, avionics, control and software subsystems.Main Activities: Develop the top-level system architecture for Solar Orbiter. Lead the overall system design process. Agree the system requirements with the Customer. Conduct technical evaluation of supplier proposals, in conjunction with the project and customer teams. Manage the project engineering team to achieve their technical, financial and programmatic requirements. Organise technical reviews of major elements and ensure that the internal review process is applied across the project. Maintain contacts with engineering teams within ENS and other Business Units, with particular emphasis on maintaining a coherent data flow and ensuring applicable lessons learned are implemented. Maintain forward load of engineering requirements for the project, liaising with resource managers to ensure availability of suitable staff. Provide technical assistance to the Project Manager on internal project matters and at external customer meetings. Mission: The Engineering Manager will be the lead for all engineering aspects of this challenging project and will provide the major technical interface with the Customer (ESA) and with subcontractors. The Engineering Manager will also be responsible for ensuring that ENS system engineering processes are effectively applied throughout the design lifecycle. Internal Relationships: The position reports directly to the Head of Future Programmes and Proposals, within ENS UK, and also to the Solar Orbiter Project Manager. He or she will provide regular inputs to key Business Unit reviews on engineering issues.
