Aircraft Technician Job Profile / Description

Aircraft technicians maintain aircraft and their mechanical systems, including engines.

 

So, what does an aircraft technician do?


An aircraft technician will simply maintain weapons, composite structures, gas turbine engines, environmental controls and more. You may be responsible for troubleshooting, returning an aircraft to service and acting as the interface with a customer. It is important to be able to work within a team but also independently.


What entry requirements are there?

For the lowest level role, a minimum of 3 GCSE/SCEs at Grade C/2 minimum or equivalent in English language, maths and an approved science/technology-based subject would be required. Some roles require a physics based science subject. Depending on the level of the role, a certain number of years experience on the job is required.


What skills do you really need for the job?


Skills and attributes that an aircraft technician should show include:

  • Helping and working with people;
  • Working with technology;
  • Driving vehicles;
  • Being hands on;
  • Enjoyment of being outside.

What would my hours be?


As the nature of the work can be very complex, occasionally you will need to work longer than expected. The standard working day lasts between 10 and 12 hours.


What sort of career progression is there?


If working in the military, it is possible to work your way up the ranks to a craftsman role or lance corporal or corporal role. Aircraft technicians can take the natural progression to become a senior or manager aircraft technician managing a team of people.


What training would I expect to do?


There will be basic training on the job but also external courses to build on skills. Specialist training will provide what is needed to be an aircraft technician.
