So what would I be doing as an IT Manager?
Here are some of the actual tasks you may be expected to do as an IT Manager.....
- Coming up with operational and strategic planning for the IT Department, including nurturing innovation, preparation of projects, and establishing and assigning the distribution of resources;
- Recommending improvements for the development of the IT infrastructure and IT systems;
- Creating business case validations with return of investment evaluations for IT spending and initiatives, while managing purchases, budgets, and reporting budget reviews;
- Progressing and advancing all IT strategies and activities, including those for architecture, security, standards, purchasing, disaster recovery, and service provision;
- Managing IT employees, including enrolment, management, deployment, development, estimation, and disciplinary actions;
- Running-through asset management for IT hardware, software, and equipment;
- Managing the distribution, upkeep, expansion, improvement, and maintenance of all IT systems, including operating systems, servers, PCs, hardware, software, and peripherals,
- Supervising provisions of end-user services, including technical support and help desk services;
- Researching the latest technology solutions in support of procurement strategies.
Are there specific entry requirements?
A university degree within the field of computer science and/or a certain number of years related work experience would be necessary along with a strong technical knowledge of network, PC operating systems, current network hardware, protocols, and standards and proven experience in IT infrastructure planning and development.

An IT manager must be able to show the following skills and attributes:
- Strong leadership skills;
- Ability to research into IT issues and products;
- Organisation skills;
- Capability of presenting ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language;
- Ability to perform general mathematical calculations for the purpose of creating business and budgets;
- Highly self-motivated and directed;
- Keen attention to detail.
The earning potential is....
A typical salary for an IT manager is anywhere between £23,000 and £32,000, although a senior IT manager with 10+ years’ experience can earn up to £100,000. Many factors can however influence this such as location and individual company resolves.
What would my hours be?
Like many other office based roles, you would be expected to work 40 hours week but in such management roles, you may need or choose to work over time.
What sort of career progression is there?
Should you wish to develop further in the future, you would have options. Many companies would have set career paths that would allow additional managerial responsibility, overseas travel or maybe the option to specialise in niche sectors. Career progression would depend on the company you were working for and you would need to discuss this with the company directly.
What training would I expect to do?
To further your skills and knowledge in IT Management, there are IT Project Management qualifications available from the Association of Project Management (APM) and the Information Systems Examinations Board (ISEB). Your employer will however most likely provide you with some kind of training as part of your employment.
