Why are colleague relationships so important in the workplace?

Having friends is more important than not having any in every aspect of life. You spend around 35 – 45 hours per week at work with your colleagues so it makes sense to feel a sense of happiness and community with those around you. It can have a knock on effect on motivations and productivity.

Here are some reasons WHY relationships are so important:

Feeling Valued

When employees feel they are valued by their co-workers it can increase motivation. Simple things like celebrating someone’s’ birthday and making them feel special is important as well as milestones, acknowledging great work and noticing achievements.

Job Satisfaction

Having friends at work can have a knock on effect on job satisfaction. If you enjoy being around your peers and are able to socialise together, enjoy conversation that are either work or not work related, celebrate birthdays etc then it is clear that you will be more satisfied at work.

Support

Not only is support important through good times by acknowledging achievements and skills etc but when times are hard, looking out for each other is vital. This could be anything relating to work or not.

Company Loyalty

Having friends at work can increase a person’s loyalty to the company as it is a big factor in deciding whether to leave and move onto a new job or not. People are not loyal to a company but to the people they work with.

Employees want to be recognized by peers

Not only do people want to recognise the good work of others but they want to recognise the work of their friends too. As a company you can try to promote these simple things and encourage people to recognise each other’s good work, saying thank you and helping each other.

It is clear that positive and healthy relationships with peer’s effect employee’s state of mind, motivation and job satisfaction. Friendships cannot be forced but will grow organically over time. The company itself is best placed to provide the tools that employees need to promote relationships and build on them. It is the company who will benefit in the end.
