The Netherlands - Overview
The Netherlands is bordered in the north and west by the North
Sea and borders with Belgium in the south and Germany in the
east. One fifth of the country is actually below sea level and
in fact the majority of the country is extremely flat and level
consisting of many rivers and canals. Many large areas of The
Netherlands have been reclaimed by the sea leaving the land
extremely fertile - these areas are known as polders.
Although The Netherlands is very much known for its windmills
and clogs there is much more to the country than that. Many
of the cities are the lively bustley type - such as, Amsterdam,
Eindhoven, Utrecht and Rotterdam. Outside of the main cities
there is marvellous countryside with the sites of windmills
and tulips and many medieval towns and beaches.
The Netherlands captures a tremendous amount of culture with
the roots stemming for the 17th century (the Golden Age). In
Amsterdam, you can explore centuries of culture across the whole
city. The country is a haven for a mix of nationalities, sexualities
and different religious and political persuasions.
Politically, the Dutch are enthusiastic Europeans and the EU
is the main focus of Dutch foreign policy.
