USA - Overview
The USA is the third largest country (behind Russia and Canada)
and has 50 states to choose from. In the North American continent,
the country borders Canada in the north and in the south it
borders Mexico. The country is surrounded by the Atlantic, Pacific
and Arctic oceans, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
In the northwest, the State of Alaska is separated from the
rest of the USA by Canada and Hawaii is found in the central
Pacific Ocean. The USA's climate is so diverse depending on
where you are varies from artic to tropical temperatures.
The USA has extremely well-known cities, including, New York,
Chicago, Seattle, Orleans, Las Vegas, San Diego to name a few,
all exuberating their own individual style, attractions and
themes. The Country is so diverse with beautiful coastlines,
expanding deserts, fantastic landscape and lively cities all
rolled into one.
Christopher Columbus founded North America in 1492 and since
this time, people have descended on the Country to explore in
search of 'the American Dream'. It has grown to be the richest,
most powerful country in the whole world.
The USA is a federal republic and has been since 1789. It gained
independence from the UK in 1776. Washington DC is the capital
city of the USA which can be found between Maryland and Virginia.
Washington DC is also known as the District of Columbia. The
country has very close relations with Puerto Rico, Guam and
the US Virgin Islands. The President is elected in an electoral
college system every 4 years and no president can serve more
than two full terms of office. Each state however, has a high
degree of self-government itself.
