Hampshire Highways has an exciting opportunity to join our progressive and dynamic team as a Highway Engineer!

The Role:

As part of the Highways team, you’ll help deliver the Highways Maintenance service in Hampshire. Working to the Principal Engineer you will have a sound understanding of highway maintenance operations and legislation to play a key role in assisting the depot management team to manage and develop a team of Assistant Highway Engineers and Technicians to deliver the highway maintenance and enforcement operations of a busy Highways office in a consistent manner and in accordance with policies and procedures. 

What you’ll do:

You will assist Principal Engineers and the Highway Management Team by communicating and liaising with a cross section of individuals and groups including elected Members, Districts/Boroughs, parishes and the public on a variety of highway related issues/problems.  You will also be required to collaborate closely with our internal & external operations partners to provide a joined-up service for our customers and identify, develop and implement service improvements. The role also includes some training and mentoring of junior staff.

What we’re looking for:

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate an understanding of highway maintenance practices, associated legislation, construction methodologies, traffic management and, highways safety including CDM, have a positive approach to partnership working and problem solving, be open to implementing change where required and be passionate about making a difference for local communities. 
 
You will be a conscientious, enthusiastic and highly motivated person who is reliable, keen to learn and a hard-working individual.  You will have the ability to manage and prioritise your workload to meet deadlines and will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, along with good IT skills.

Although primarily an office-based role, you will have the ability to fulfil the travel requirements of the role and, as required, be able to work out of hours to respond to weather and other emergencies. You will be required to travel to various locations within Hampshire, and it is essential that you have a current drivers’ licence.
 
This position provides an opportunity for you to attend training and complete a Level 6 Civil Engineering apprenticeship or a Level 3 Leadership and Management Apprenticeship, to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours as set out in the apprenticeship standard.
