How You Make An Impact
The Legal Summer Intern will support Valvoline Global Operations' (VGO) in-house legal department during the summer term, working under the guidance of an Associate Counsel. This position provides law students with a structured opportunity to gain practical experience in a dynamic, global corporate legal environment. The intern will contribute to the legal team’s ongoing projects and will be exposed to a variety of legal practice areas impacting a multinational business.
This internship is designed to support both the intern's legal education and VGO's operational needs by offering hands-on assignments and real-time legal challenges that contribute to the success of the legal team and the company overall.
Responsibilities Include
-Legal Research and Analysis
-Conduct legal research on federal, state, and international issues affecting business operations.
-Analyze statutes, regulations, and case law to support legal team decision-making.
-Summarize findings in written legal memoranda or presentations.
-Document Drafting, Review, and Maintenance
-Assist in reviewing and organizing contracts, compliance documents, litigation document production, and internal policies.
-Draft various documents, including addenda, assignments, position statements, subpoena responses, and demand letters.
-Assist in processing various agreements, including final review and signature coordination.
-Draft legal correspondence, research summaries, and basic contract templates.
-Support the preparation of presentations, reports, and other legal documentation.
-Corporate Legal Support
-Aid in tracking regulatory developments, contract renewals, and legal deadlines.
-Participate in internal meetings related to compliance, ethics, and corporate governance.
-Help organize and maintain digital legal files, contracts, and reference materials.
-Cross-Functional Collaboration
-Partner with cross-functional teams (e.g., Compliance, HR, Procurement, and Operations) to gain exposure to legal support across business units.
-Participate in assigned team projects, contributing a legal perspective under supervision.
-Learning & Development
-Attend scheduled legal department meetings and intern development sessions.
-Observe and shadow in-house counsel to better understand corporate law practice.
-Attend and observe court appearances, depositions, business meetings and mediations.
What You’ll Need

-Enrollment in an accredited law school, ideally entering 2L or 3L year.
-Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
-Demonstrated interest in corporate law, employment law, contracts, compliance, or related areas.
-Ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
-Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
-Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to relate to and inspire confidence with sophisticated business groups.
-A collaborative, professional, and proactive mindset and a high-level of confidentiality.
-Must be able to work on-site at VGO’s Lexington, KY headquarters.
