Town Planner - Birmingham

Are you an experienced planner looking to take the next step with a dynamic, client-focused development consultancy? We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established independent planning practice working across residential, industrial/logistics and education sectors. This is a superb opportunity to join a team known for its professional integrity, excellent client service and strong commercial acumen.

Our client is an independent town planning and development consultancy based in the Midlands, with a reputation for building long-term relationships with developers, landowners and institutions. Their work spans residential, industrial and logistics, and education projects, with a portfolio that includes large-scale residential and mixed-use sites, strategic policy work, educational campus development and logistics/warehouse schemes.

As a Town Planner, you will lead and manage planning applications from inception to decision, including preparing statements, site appraisals, design and access documents, and coordinating consultants. You will undertake development plan and policy analysis and provide input into local plan consultations. You will also build and maintain client relationships while acting as a point of contact for stakeholders, liaise with Local Planning Authorities, statutory consultees and third parties, negotiate where required, and ensure high-quality, technically accurate planning submissions with commercial awareness. The role also includes mentoring junior staff and contributing to business development and the strategic growth of the planning team.

We are seeking candidates with a minimum of 3-5 years (mid level) or 5-7+ years (senior level) proven experience in town planning, preferably in a consultancy environment. You should have strong knowledge of UK planning legislation, development management, permitted development, local plan policy and related matters. Experience in residential and/or industrial/logistics sectors is highly desirable. You should demonstrate commercial acumen, the ability to balance client objectives, risk and planning policy, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to manage a varied workload.

In return, the role offers a competitive salary (depending on experience), exposure to high value and technically challenging projects, career progression opportunities, a supportive working environment with strong emphasis on professional development, and flexible/hybrid working arrangements.

The position is based in the Midlands with some travel to client sites and Local Planning Authority offices.
